“The real trick in today’s book world is the marketing. Set up your social media and your newsletter lists but understand that the best marketing plan will not sell a bad book. Work on your craft.  “

Jamie writes the cutest, funniest stories, and is the author of 11 published books. Learning the craft of fiction writing, she wrote four books before she ever self-published her first one. The sixth book in her Misfit Brides series has a cover reveal this fall! We met up in Washington DC at the September General Meeting and Fall Kick-off of Washington Romance Writers where she gave a wonderful workshop on Facebook Ads. I grabbed her the night before to chat about her journey. Her professionalism and business sense are exactly what today’s authors need to emulate. I hope you find motivation from Jamie’s story to finish your book and launch your author business.

TODAY’S SPONSOR: Harper Kincaid

Born in California and raised in South Florida, Harper Kincaid has moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on her head ever since. For years, she was a jill of all trades and a master of none, but is now tickled hot pink to pen stories that break and mend people’s hearts for a living. Kincaid believes seduction occurs from the neck up, which is why her characters are smart, sexy, and slightly quirky – and definitely worthy to be your next hard-core book crush.

When not writing, she adores listening to indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl,  the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to her laugh ’til they snort. She is a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but has now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia.

Check out all her books at Harper Kincaid Books!

WRITER NATION PODCAST #1: Be kind to Yourself, Keely Thrall

WRITER NATION PODCAST #1: Be kind to Yourself, Keely Thrall

Ms Keely Thrall

Writer, Actor, Plant-based Test Eater, Motivator

“Be kind to yourself. If you’re doing it right, you’re putting yourself out there and your work will be critiqued. You need to differentiate the criticism of your work from perceived criticism of yourself. If you can do that, you’ll be rewarded.”

For someone who never wrote a thing before attending her first writers meeting, Keely Thrall founded the Washington DC Tuesday Night Writers Group and is a finalist for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award. She is a former president of Washington Romance Writers and is endlessly supportive of writers, and tirelessly works to help others, sometimes to the detriment of her own writing. We sat down in her DC condo and chatted about how she came to be a writer. As the daughter of scholars, she assumed she’d be a scholar one day, not a writer. Her pursuit of graduate degrees and hobbies like improv led to a winding path of discovery that she has stories inside her.

We cover a wide range of topics on the show:

  • Getting outside your comfort zone
  • Experiencing life in order to write
  • Plant-based lifestyle and eating choices
  • What to do about writer’s block
  • Writing in Washington DC
  • Depression and finding ways to manage it
