Facebook Marketing with Cherry Adair

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 1.40.54 AMI just spent the weekend learning about new plotting methods, character development and dialogue with the NYTimes Bestseller Cherry Adair. What a hoot she is!

While her session was about the mechanics of writing, I got to spend a little bit of time chatting with her about her marketing. What struck me the most was her Facebook. The woman runs 12 Facebook pages, herself. Yes, twelve!

Now, I’m not a huge fan of Facebook because I don’t like their business practices, and I’ve found a lot of new writers have a hard time building a fan base on Facebook. Or they end up spending a lot of money on ads that don’t get them anywhere. But Cherry is obviously doing something right, because she has thousands of fans across those pages, so I decided to do a little investigating.

What stood out to me is this: she runs her own Facebook. Yes, she has an assistant, but the joy she gets from doing her own Facebook is apparent and she doesn’t farm it out. The other thing that stood out is the giveaways. My goodness, she gives away a lot. She laughed when asked about it because her husband and her accountant wished she wouldn’t give away so much stuff. But she enjoys bringing sunshine into people’s days.

I also asked her how she gets it all done, and I love her strategy:

  • Once a month, she schedules all her posts for the month. Takes a couple of hours, but she’s done. You can do this with Facebook’s scheduling feature or use a dashboard like Hootsuite.
  • Daily, she checks out her pages. Because she’s scheduled everything, she gets to spend the rest of the month commenting, sharing and liking without worrying about creating new content. It’s clear when she’s talking about it how much fun she has doing it. To illustrate how easy it was, she picked up her smartphone, swiped out a response and put it back down…a total of 15 seconds and she was done. You can definitely do this too. When you have a second, waiting in a line or just bored, take a quick look and like or comment.
  • Cherry likes Snapple, and drinks a lot of it. One of her favorite things to post is her Snapple bottle cap sayings, quotes she enjoys, questions and contests. What do you like to eat, drink, read, do every single day? See if it’s something you can use to help your readers get to know you.

Liz Pelletier, founder of Entangled Publishing, agrees that if you can carve out a niche for yourself you should. Cherry has the Snapple market and what a cute idea. MK Meredith does peanut butter and Gerard Butler. Jamie Farrell, her nicknamed kids’ antics.

NOW WHAT? What do you like? Find one or two things and start making yourself the go-to for that topic. Be fun, sassy, quirky and consistent. Start there and move on when you’re comfortable. Post in the comments what you’re starting with and make sure to post your Facebook Page so we can all follow it. Got questions? Feel free to ask.
